About Truancy Prevention Program
The youth of Seward County are our most precious resource. One of the earliest indicators that something may be wrong in a youth’s life is chronic truancy. The Seward County Attorney has made truancy prevention one of her top priorities. The program was established to help the youth of Seward County achieve their educational needs.
The Truancy Prevention Program has a series of progressive measures and interventions to improve student attendance. It is the goal of the Truancy Prevention Program that each student graduate from high school and receive a diploma.
How the Program Works
Step 1: One to three truancies
- Defer to the existing protocol for truants that have been established by the School District
Step 2: Minimum of four to five truancies
- The school will fill out the referral form and submit the form along with attendance records to the program. The parents will be contacted by the truancy case manager. The program will monitor attendance over the next few weeks.
Step 3: Minimum of five to ten
- A second contact will be made to the parents. The parents and youth will attend an enrollment meeting. Intervention strategies will be implemented.
Step 4: Minimum of eight to ten
- Student and parent will be required to meet with the school and truancy case manager. Intervention strategies will be implemented.
Step 5: Ten or more truancies
- A referral to the Seward County Attorney. Prosecution of the parent or student may follow.
