September 1

Missionary Kids (MKs)

Approximately 19 MKs attend college in the United States. Four are freshmen. Please pray for these young adults as they are separated from their families, especially for the freshmen during this time of adjustment. Birthday: Linda Meyer, Chokio, Minn.

 

September 2

Claude and Rhoda Houge, Ghana

The Houges conduct in-service training of national pastors and teach students at the Evangelical Lutheran Seminary in Accra, Ghana. The Houges have also learned sign language and are training deaf church leaders. This summer they will expand deaf ministry by hosting volunteers to Ghana who are also skilled in sign language. Pray for evangelism among deaf people who are often marginalized. Birthday: Chaplain John Wohlrabe, Brunswick, Maine.

 

September 3

Navy Chaplain David Otten, Norfolk, Va.

David serves sailors in Destroyer Squadron 28. In days of strenuous training and demanding schedules, pray for David’s ministry to the squadron staff, its sailors and its families. Birthdays: Nathan Medlin, Taiwan; Heidi Norton, Guinea.

Mission Societies

Thank God for the many mission societies and other partners offering to work with LCMS World Mission to share the Good News about Jesus with 100 million unreached people in North America and around the world. Birthday: Chaplain William Sager, Washington. D.C.

 

September 5

Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS)

The effects of SARS have been far-reaching in some LCMS mission fields, including the disruption of normal daily activities. Please pray for containment of the virus that has claimed so many lives. Pray that God will protect the health of missionaries working in regions where SARS is a concern. Birthday: Hilbert Riemer, Korea.

 

September 6

LCMS World Mission

Pray that God will bless LCMS mission efforts throughout the world, that in spite of budget restraints, our church body will actively support mission endeavors. Pray that through the power of the Holy Spirit, the LCMS will be mobilized to share the Gospel in all communities. Birthday: Dale Saville, Venezuela.

 

September 7

David and Joyce Erber, Nigeria

David teaches at the Jonathan Ekong Memorial Lutheran Seminary in Obot Idim, training others to serve The Lutheran Church of Nigeria. Please pray for the Erbers as they train pastors and evangelists in Nigeria, and pray for these men as they reach out with the message of Jesus Christ to the people of Nigeria, which has a large Muslim population.

 

 

 

 

September 8

College Seniors

Pray for those students in college who are entering their final year of school. May the Lord continue to bless their studies and education experience. May He also guide and direct them as they have many decisions to make about the future and where they might serve the Lord.

 

September 9

Emily Martens, Macau

Emily has joined the team in Macau, teaching English as a Second Language. Please pray for Emily as she learns a new job and language, and as she meets new people and works with other missionaries serving in Macau. Birthday: Emily Martens, Macau.

 

September 10

Robert and Betty Holste, Thailand

The Holstes are serving in their fourth volunteer missionary assignment. Praise God for their continued service and dedication to His mission and ministry. Pray that they will be blessed with good health and strength as they work with the Thai people to bring them the love of Jesus Christ.

 

September 11

World Peace

Pray for President Bush and other world leaders as they continue to strive for peace and stability throughout the world. Pray that the hearts of those who are obstacles to lasting peace will be transformed by the Holy Spirit and that their ears will be open to the Word of Jesus Christ.

 

September 12

Holly Singleton and Joy Stuhr, Panama

Holly and Joy are new volunteer missionaries teaching English-as-a-Second Language classes in Panama. Please pray for them as they adjust to this new culture and demonstrate the love of Christ in their relationships with their students. Birthday: Chaplain James Hoke, Germany.

 

September 13

Evangelical Lutheran Church in Ghana

Many unreached people groups in Ghana—especially the Kusasi, the Mamprusi and the Dagomba in northern Ghana—have requested that the Gospel be preached in their villages. Please pray that ways will be found to honor these requests and bring the Word of Christ to these people. Birthdays: Frederick Reinhardt, Togo; Kristen Schmaltz, Guinea.

 

September 14

Charles Burnett, Taiwan

Chuck serves as an English/Bible teacher at Concordia Middle School in Chia-Yi, where he has served for more than six years. Please pray that Chuck will continue to build relationships with both students and teachers and that their hearts will be open to the Gospel message.

 

September 15

Army Chaplain Joe Ed Pederson, Fort Bliss, Texas

Joe is the Family Life Center chaplain at Fort Bliss. Soldiers there train and serve in air defense artillery commands. Pray for Joe’s ministry as he brings Christ to strengthen, comfort and uphold those soldiers and family members in all their needs. Birthday: Cheryl Dart, Japan.

International Educators

Throughout the world, there are 96 LCMS international educators serving in Christian schools. Please pray for these teachers as they develop relationships with students and families in various cultural settings.

Glenn and Susan Fluegge, Togo

Glenn serves as the director of the seminary and training center for French-speaking church leaders in West Africa. Please pray for the growth of this center and the partner church bodies that support it. Birthdays: Sharon Oetting, Guinea; Darrell Van Luchene, Indonesia.

 

September 18

Concordia International School Shanghai (CISS), China

The new CISS school building’s dedication celebration begins today. In four years, the school has developed into an influential international school. Beautiful Feet Mission Conference

Ask God to bless the upcoming Beautiful Feet Mission Conference for Lutheran college students as preparations for this national conference increase. Pray for safe travel and enthusiastic participation at this October event to be held at Concordia University, Seward, Neb. Morris and Jean Olson, Kazakhstan

Morris handles many logistical details for volunteer and career missionaries in Kazakhstan. Please pray for the Olsons as they serve the Lord and give aid to the missionaries there.

 

September 21

Wendy Armington and Reid Weber, Slovakia

Wendy and Reid have joined the volunteer missionary team in Slovakia to teach English-as-a-Second-Language classes in a Lutheran high school. Please pray for them as they adapt to this new culture and share the Good News of salvation in Christ with the youth of Slovakia.

 

September 22

Volunteer Youth Ministry, Japan

Four new volunteer missionaries have just arrived in Japan. Please pray for Jason Bjork, Cindy Charlton, and Jim and Sarah Roberts as they begin their 2.5 years of service to the Japanese people. India Evangelical Lutheran Church

A partner church of the LCMS since 1959, the India Evangelical Lutheran Church, is an independent church body in southern India. It has a strong theological education program that trains pastors for the church. Please pray for Concordia Seminary in Nagercoil, that the pastors and lay leaders may be able to effectively reach the many diverse people groups that are in India. Birthday: Dennis Oetting, Hong Kong.

 

September 24

Michael and Catherine Tanney, Puerto Rico

Mike is working to plant a church in the city of Mayaguez. He also is working with small groups, Sunday school classes and Bible studies. Please pray for the Tanneys as they demonstrate to the people of Puerto Rico how to bring Christ into their daily lives.

Missionary Recruitment

Please lift up the efforts of LCMS World Mission as it recruits another group of volunteer and career missionaries for terms of service beginning next summer. Pray that God will open the hearts of many to consider missionary service, and that the efforts of the staff will be effective in encouraging them to serve. Frank Durtschy, Brazil

Frank is volunteering to be a house parent for six months at an orphanage in Brazil. Praise God for Frank and his willingness to serve as Christ’s own hands and feet to the residents of this center. Birthdays: Bruce Voeltz, Hong Kong; Chaplain James Robinson, Fort Lee, Va.

 

September 27

Air Force Chaplain Gary Piepkorn, Onizuka Air Station, Calif.

Gary serves 37 miles southeast of San Francisco with the 21st Space Operations Squadron, which conducts launch and orbit operations and communications for Defense Department and commercial space systems. Ask God to bless Chaplain Piepkorn’s ministry to these dedicated civilians and Air Force personnel. Birthdays: Erin Alter, Japan; Chaplain David Jacob, Germany; Cheryl Talsma, Guatemala.

 

September 28

Kenneth and Janice Boudreau, St. Louis, Mo.

Ken, the former Director of the Volunteer Youth Ministry program in Taiwan, has begun studies at Concordia Seminary. Please pray for Ken and Janice and their two young children as they adjust to living in the United States after 12 years of service in Taiwan. Ask the Lord to bless their new vocation and ministry. September 29

David Ernst, Venezuela

David is a volunteer agricultural missionary in Venezuela. He already has served on several short-term mission teams, and this is his first long-term assignment. Praise God that David is a willing and faithful servant. Pray that he may be able to share his expertise with Venezuelan farm workers effectively. Birthday: Chaplain Walter Steele, Princeton, N.J.

 

September 30

Returning Volunteer Missionaries

Several volunteer missionaries have returned from serving in long-term assignments. Please pray for these missionaries as they continue to serve Jesus Christ in a new capacity. Praise God that they were able to serve and touch the hearts of many around the world.
