| The Potato Bake has been a fund-raising event since 1994 when the Seniors had a Baked Potato Bar Luncheon while they were still downstairs at the Civic Center. Many fund-raisers were held to raise funds to build their current Senior Center at 1010 Manor Drive W. Fund-raisers are still needed to help with funding of the budget.
The Potato Bake is served on the fourth Thursday of each month from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. The suggested donation for this simply delicious meal is only $5. Approximately 200 people are served each month.
Several cases of No. 1 Idaho potatoes are purchased each month from CWD in Kearney. These are scrubbed and foil-wrapped by a group of 10 to 12 volunteers. They are then cooked in the Center's convection oven. Many condiments are available to fix the potato just the way you want it: meat sauce, melted cheese, broccoli and cheese, grated cheese, butter, plain sour cream, sour cream with chives, chopped onions and real bacon bits.
A popular part of the lunch is the dessert table from which diners may choose their favorite piece of home-made pie or dessert.
Many volunteers are needed to set up tables, wrap silverware, prepare potatoes and condiments, cook the meat sauce as well as to serve potatoes and desserts, and to keep cups or glasses filled with coffee, iced tea or water. And, let's not forget volunteers for "clean up" -- so important!
